A classic five-arm chandelier The EGIDA 1795 is a chandelier in the traditional arrangement: five curved arms spring from a central stem, each ending in a shade, and the whole hangs on a chain beneath a round canopy. The steel frame is finished in high-gloss gold, set against matt black shades. It spans 74 cm and stands 80 cm tall. Black shades and crystal drops The shades are slightly tapered cones of black fabric stretched over a PVC former. Small black crystal drops hang beneath the arms and below the central stem — they break the severity of the gold-and-black pairing and add the one element that starts to glitter once the light is on. The combination of polished gold with black is deliberate: this is meant to read as classical rather than palatial. Five E27 sockets — with an important wattage limit The fitting carries five E27 sockets and takes replaceable lamps, which are not supplied. The manufacturer states a maximum of 15 W per socket — a figure set with LED lamps in mind. It is worth respecting: the shade closes the lamp in from above, and the tight space under the fabric makes it hard to shed the heat a stronger lamp would produce in greater quantity than the construction can dissipate. With five 15 W LED lamps the chandelier still gives considerably more light than a typical dining room needs. Where the light goes — down, and onto the walls The shades are open at top and bottom, so light leaves in both directions: some onto the table, some onto the ceiling. That is the usual behaviour of a shaded chandelier and convenient in practice, because the room does not split into a bright table and a dark remainder. The dark fabric absorbs part of the sideways output, which makes the light more concentrated than the same fitting with pale shades would give. Mounting and installation data The fitting hangs on a chain and fixes to the ceiling through a round canopy. It weighs 3 kg, no burden for an ordinary ceiling, though a suspended one calls for a load-bearing channel. Supply is ordinary 230 V, and IP20 protection assigns it to dry interiors. The manufacturer covers it with a five-year warranty. The carton measures 60 × 60 × 60 cm — worth checking if you plan to collect it yourself. Where it works A 74 cm span is chandelier scale for a medium to large room. It does its best work over a dining table — five points arranged in a circle light the surface evenly — and in a living room of classical character. Gold against black belongs in glamour and art deco interiors, but the restrained form also settles into classically furnished flats with no ostentation.
