The grease-lubricated joints are protected from environmental influences by CV boots and seals. Over the years, the boots become cracked. The grease can leak out, and dirt can then damage the joint. Therefore, the CV boots are checked during the vehicle inspection and are frequently flagged as defective. Defective joints are noticeable through cracking or grinding noises when cornering. It is advisable to replace worn driveshafts promptly to avoid consequential damage from the resulting vibrations. This seal was installed in the 911S, SC, and Carrera models up to 1986 (introduction of the G50 transmission).
