In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings, for example, deep groove ball bearings and needle bearings; newer models usually have double-row angular contact ball bearings. Open rolling bearings with separate shaft seals were also used in the past. These have now been replaced by lifetime-lubricated bearings thanks to "functional integration." If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable by a "thumping" noise when cornering. A firm wiggle of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
