The connecting rod is guided on the piston pin bearing surfaces by plain bearings (connecting rod bushings). Defective connecting rod bushings are primarily noticeable through noise (knocking, clattering), which increases with rising engine speed. If a damaged connecting rod bearing or bushing is not replaced promptly, significant consequential damage (bearing seizure) can occur, such as the destruction of the bearing surfaces on the crankshaft and piston pin. Therefore, defective bearing bushings should be replaced immediately. When working on the connecting rod, the connecting rod bolts and nuts should always be replaced as well.
