Wheel bearings are the central rolling bearings on vehicles that guide the wheel via the wheel hub in the wheel carrier. In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings; newer models usually have only a double-row angular contact ball bearing. In the past, open rolling bearings with separate shaft seals were used, as in the 911 F-model or the 930. These have now been replaced by lifetime-lubricated bearings thanks to "functional integration." If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable by a "thumping" noise when cornering. A firm wiggle of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
