Desert Weave Antique is a photo frame for the 13 × 18 cm format, its wide moulding faced with plates of buffalo bone. Each plate carries closely cut vertical grooves, and the darker streaks and small flecks are the natural figure of the material. The manufacturer gives outer dimensions of 15 × 20 cm at 1.5 cm thick.Getting the photo inThe back is closed by a board held down by four metal clips. Turn them with your fingers, lift the board off and lay the photo in — no tools are involved. 13 × 18 cm is a standard print size, so a photo from the lab needs no trimming.Standing or hangingA hinged strut folds out of the back and sets the frame at an angle on a shelf, a chest of drawers or a desk. Above it sit two keyhole openings side by side, which take the frame onto a wall in portrait orientation. One fixing does not rule out the other, so the frame moves from shelf to wall without alteration. At 1.5 cm thick the frame hangs close to the wall and does not stand off it the way a deep moulding does.What it is made ofThe buffalo-bone plates cover a wooden body, and the moulding is mitred at the corners at 45 degrees. The pattern of the grooves and the tone of the bone differ between plates and between pieces, so the frame that arrives is not a copy of the product photograph — bone is a natural material and every piece carries its own figure.
