The s.luce Cloud is a table lamp built from two parts: a black metal cylinder holding the lampholder, and a round metal disc 50 cm across standing behind it. On this variant the disc is white, and a dimmer knob sits on the side of the cylinder. The lamp stands 64 cm tall. How much surface it takes up The lamp occupies a square of 50 cm a side, which is the span of the disc, and reaches 64 cm upwards. Compare those figures with the depth of the sideboard or the width of the side table it is meant for: the base is a narrow cylinder, but the disc overhangs it on both sides. The same base is offered in the Cloud range with discs of 30, 40 and 50 cm, at heights of 44, 54 and 64 cm. This is the largest of the three. The light it gives and what you buy alongside The holder takes one GU10 lamp, and no bulb is supplied, so the colour and brightness are your choice. Light leaves the cylinder and falls on the disc, which the manufacturer calls a reflector: it bounces off the metal surface and returns into the room diffused rather than shining straight at you. The rotary dimmer is built into the base, so you do not need a dimmer in the wall to change the brightness. What you do need is a GU10 lamp the manufacturer describes as dimmable — an ordinary one will flicker or ignore the knob altogether. Build and connection Cylinder and disc are metal throughout. The disc sits in a holder beside the lampholder and lifts off; the manufacturer describes it as interchangeable and offers it in three diameters and three finishes — white, black and gold leaf. One white 50 cm disc is included. The fitting is protection class I, so its metal body has to be earthed and an earthed socket is required. Supply is 230 V, the cable leaves the bottom of the cylinder, and the IP20 rating covers indoor use only.Show more
