MARTINICA is a handmade pendant from the Polish studio Las Plumas: a cylindrical shade 25 cm across, covered in red and burgundy velvet, edged with multi-coloured ribbons and cords, and finished at the bottom with a 14 cm fringe. A gold bird figurine hangs beneath the shade.The gold interior changes the colour of the light The inside of the shade carries a glossy gold coating. That is not a decorative detail but an optical one: light reflected off gold returns into the room noticeably warmer and more honeyed than it left the bulb. Combined with dark velvet, which lets no light through sideways, it produces a concentrated warm cone downward and a clearly drawn pool on the table.Two heights that need separating The shade alone is 17 cm tall, but the overall height with the figurine is 45 cm — the figure adds nearly 30 cm and hangs in the line of sight rather than tucking under the shade. The cable is 150 cm, so that is what sets the hanging range; the ceiling rose is small, 10 × 3 cm.What comes in the box The lamp arrives electrically complete: lampholder, 150 cm cable and ceiling rose are all included. No bulb is supplied — the fitting takes any E27 lamp, so colour and output are yours to choose. With a gold interior, warm white is the natural pick; cold light undoes the very effect this lamp was built for.A handmade piece The shade is sewn by hand onto a black lacquered steel frame, and every ribbon, cord and tassel is fixed individually. That means individual pieces can differ in small ways — the arrangement of the trim, the tone of the velvet — and that this is a property of the object rather than a fault.
