Orb Tripod is a floor lamp on a matt black steel tripod carrying a mouth-blown globe of brown transparent glass, 50 cm across. It stands 160 cm tall, with the globe seated at the top of the frame where the three legs meet. How much room it takes The manufacturer gives a 50 by 50 cm footprint — that is the floor the splayed legs cover and also the reach of the globe. A gap between furniture therefore needs half a metre in both directions, not just the width of the tripod at its feet. At 160 cm the globe sits above the backs of seating, so the lamp throws light over them instead of disappearing behind an armchair placed alongside. Which bulb to buy There is one E27 socket and the manufacturer supplies no bulb, so the lamp is bought separately. The maximum rating is 40 W, which today's LED bulbs do not come close to: every common replacement fits under it. The glass is transparent rather than opal, so the bulb is seen through the globe just as its light is. That argues for a bulb worth looking at — a decorative one with a visible filament — and against a long tube or a squared-off envelope. The lamp can be dimmed but does not dim by itself: it needs a bulb marked as dimmable and a dimmer on the supply. Build and where it stands The globe is mouth-blown glass coloured brown through the body, the frame is steel in matt black — two materials and two finishes in one object. The fitting is protection class I, so it works with an earth conductor at the socket. An IP20 rating confines it to dry interiors.
