In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings, for example, deep groove ball bearings and needle bearings; newer models generally have double-row angular contact ball bearings. Open rolling bearings with separate shaft seals were also used in the past. These have now been replaced by lifetime-lubricated bearings thanks to "functional integration."
