This is a floor lamp 166 cm tall. A slim brass-coloured metal tube rises from a round, flat base, and a spherical head sits on top of it: short arms radiate from a central brass ball and end in teardrop shades of smoky brown tinted glass. How much room it takes The head is 55 cm across, and it is the head rather than the base that sets the space the lamp needs. The tube is thin and the base clearly narrower than the head, so the lamp stands close to a wall or beside a sofa - but at around a metre and a half it widens to the full 55 cm and needs clear space there. 166 cm is roughly the height of an adult, so the shades sit above the eye line of someone seated and below the eye line of someone standing. That height also decides the proportion: beside a low sofa the lamp clearly rises above it, beside a tall chest of drawers it comes level. Smoked glass and brushed brass The shades are glass tinted a smoky brown. Tinted glass passes less light than clear glass and mutes the bright point of the bulb, so each globe shows a subdued, warm glow rather than a hard glare. The light from this lamp is therefore atmospheric rather than task lighting. The metal parts - tube, base, central ball and arms - have a brushed brass-coloured finish: matt, with no mirror shine. The materials the manufacturer states are glass and metal. Where to put it The shades are arranged all around the head, at the back and on top as well, so the lamp looks the same from every side and can stand in the middle of a room rather than only against a wall.
