KADUX 1 is a square recessed downlight with a GU10 socket, in matt black, with gimbal tilt over a 30° range. It needs an 8 × 8 cm cut-out and 13 cm of installation depth. Gimbal tilt – a downlight that aims The inner body is gimbal-mounted, so it rotates and tilts independently of the square frame, which stays parallel to the ceiling. The tilt range is 30°. That is the essential difference from a fixed downlight. A row of these can all be aimed at one wall – with pictures, with shelving, with textured plaster – while keeping a perfectly regular grid of squares on the ceiling. After a rearrangement only the inserts are re-aimed; the frames stay where they are. An 8 × 8 cm cut-out and 13 cm of depth Two numbers to check before buying. The cut-out is square, 8 × 8 cm – a different format from the usual round downlights, needing a rectangular opening rather than a hole saw. More important is the second figure: 13 cm of installation depth. Thirteen centimetres is a lot. In an ordinary suspended plasterboard ceiling the void above the board is often less, particularly where ventilation ducting runs or in a low room. Measure this before ordering, because it decides whether the fitting will go in at all. It fixes with spring clips – the fitting slides into the opening and the springs open above the board, pulling the frame up to the ceiling. Installation without screws, but it does need a rigid board of adequate thickness. A GU10 socket rated to 50 W The fitting takes GU10 lamps in the QPAR51 format (the standard 50 mm reflector), with a 50 W limit. That limit dates from the halogen era; today's sensible choice is a 5–9 W LED, which at the same size gives comparable output at a tenth of the consumption. Because the fitting is directional, the lamp's beam angle sets the effect: 24–36° gives a defined cone on a picture or a shelf, 60° a soft wash over part of the room. No lamp is supplied.
