Once the grease has been washed out of the axial joint or tie rod end, the ball joint will fail within a few thousand kilometers. At the latest, the defective rubber boots or ball joints will be flagged during the vehicle inspection (TÜV). Because replacing the tie rod always requires a new wheel alignment with toe adjustment, it is recommended to replace the entire tie rod depending on its condition. This is characterized by the play-free ball joint, also called axial joint, on the inside of the tie rod.
