Thioglycollate and L-Cystine reduce the redox potential of the culture medium and create an anaerobic atmosphere, along with inactivating mercury and other heavy metal compounds. The presence of agar reduces a rapid diffusion of oxygen through the medium but may lead to slight turbidity in larger volumes (filled bottles).
