Cruet XL is a pendant fitting with eight smoked-glass shades hung on black cables from a single round canopy 80 cm across. Each shade is an elongated cylinder 17 cm in diameter and 30 cm tall, and the cables are cut to different lengths so the shades hang in a cascade across several levels. Where a fitting like this goes The cables run to 500 cm, so the fitting is meant for spaces open through two storeys: a stairwell, a hall with a gallery, a living room under a pitched roof. In a room of ordinary 250-270 cm height not even half the drop can be used and the cascade loses its staggering - the cables then have to be shortened to a few tens of centimetres and the shades end up on almost one level. The canopy covers a circle 80 cm across on the ceiling and is only 4 cm deep, so the entire load sits on one fixing point. The fitting weighs about 15.7 kg - a weight that has to be carried by the structural ceiling rather than by a suspended plasterboard ceiling on its own. How much light it gives There are eight E27 lampholders, each rated for a lamp of up to 40 W. No bulbs are supplied, so colour and brightness are your choice - and across eight light points the difference between warm 2700 K and neutral 4000 K decides the effect through the whole void. The glass is smoked and translucent: the lamp stays visible through it and the light comes out dimmer and warmer than from clear glass. The shape of the lamp itself therefore reads through the shade, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing bulbs. The manufacturer states the fitting can be dimmed, provided lamps described as dimmable and a matching dimmer are used. Build and connection The shades are mouth-blown glass, which in practice means small differences in shape and wall thickness between pieces. The remaining parts - canopy, lampholders and suspensions - are metal. The fitting is protection class I, so an earth conductor is needed to connect it; in an older two-core installation that is worth checking before installation.
